There are more than 100 thousand “modern slaves” in England

It is stated that the number of “modern slaves” in England is estimated to be over 100 thousand.

While slavery, banned by international conventions, appears with its new forms today, the report titled “Fight against slavery” published by the Social Justice Center (CSJ) revealed that “modern time slavery” has become widespread in England.

In the CSJ report, modern slavery was defined as “human trafficking, forced labor, debt bondage, sexual abuse, the sale and abuse of children, and slavery itself”.

In the report, it was emphasized that the police forces in the UK committed 5,414 modern slavery crimes in 2019, which means an increase of 51 percent compared to the previous year.

The report stated that the number of modern slaves is much higher than it was thought and increased by 119 percent in the last 5 years, and it is estimated that there are over 100 thousand modern slaves in England.

The report also included a survey in which British awareness of modern slavery was measured.

In the survey, 68 percent of respondents said they saw modern slavery as the most important problem politicians should solve.

It was also noted that an economic crisis that may occur due to the outbreak of the new type of corona virus (Covid-19) can increase modern slavery conditions and human trafficking.
