“Umbrella Revolution” leader he was fired in Hong Kong

Professor Benny Tai, one of the leaders of the mass protests “Umbrella Revolution” held in 2014 in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China, was removed from his post at the University of Hong Kong.

Voting was held at the university council to remove the professor of law, Tai, from the University of Hong Kong. In the voting, the termination of the 56-year-old Tai was accepted with 2 votes against 18.

In a statement after the vote from China’s Liaison Office in Hong Kong, the decision to dismiss Tai was described as “punishment for evil and advocating for justice”.

In the statement, it was argued that the dismissal of Tai was in line with all of Hong Kong’s interests, thereby meeting the expectations of society and preserving social justice.

Benny Tai, one of the 9 activists convicted of the “public-damaging behavior” crime on grounds of organizing mass protests “Occupy Central”, also called “The Umbrella Revolution” in 2014 in Hong Kong, was released on bail in August 2019 for $ 12,755 he released.

WHAT IS THE UMBRELLA REVOLUTION?

In August 2014, China announced that the people of Hong Kong could elect their own leaders in the election scheduled for 2017, but the candidates would be determined by a large representative committee. Thereupon, the pro-independence held demonstrations in Hong Kong.

The events that started with the slogan “Occupy Central” were called the “Umbrella Revolution” in the international public as demonstrators opened umbrellas to protect themselves against tear gas used by the police.

Those who want independence from China advocate holding universal standards in the region instead of the graded election system.

Hong Kong was handed over to China in 1997 after long years of British rule under the “lease agreement” signed in 1898.

Within the framework of the joint declaration signed, Hong Kong was granted the right to maintain its administrative independence and structure with a “one country, two systems” policy by adhering to China only in areas such as foreign policy and defense until 2047.
