Thousands of demonstrators in Austria protested Covid-19 measures

Thousands of people against the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) measures coming from different regions of Austria to the capital Vienna, organized a demonstration to lift the measures.

Demonstrators came from different assembly areas and gathered in Heroes’ Square of the city.

Alongside the Austrian flags, “(Prime Minister Sebastian) Kurz must go”, “Will the quarantine last forever?” The demonstrators, who opened banners with the words, closed the Ring Street to traffic and marched.

Reacting to the proposals to extend the quarantine practice in the country, the demonstrators demanded that the restrictions be lifted as soon as possible.

Extreme right wing showdown

The show, which did not comply with the basic Covid-19 rules such as mask and distance, turned into a body show of the far right. Anti-government slogans were chanted during the demonstration, which also attended by names such as former far-right leader Heinz Christian Strache and Identityists Movement Spokesperson Martin Seller.

On the other hand, another group protested opponents of the Covid-19 measures. Left-wing protesters reacted to allowing the far right to hold demonstrations, using the Covid-19 measures as an excuse.

Meanwhile, the police took extensive security measures to prevent the two left and right-wing groups from coming into contact. In the statement made by the police regarding the demonstration, it was noted that criminal action was taken against people from both groups who did not obey the rules.

While the extension of the quarantine, which is expected to expire on January 24 in Austria, is being discussed, the continuing spread of the mutated species of Covid-19, which emerged in the UK, raises concerns.
