The oldest restaurant in the world ‘in death’ according to the Guinness Book of Records. Recognized as the oldest restaurant in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records. 295-year-old restaurant named “Botin” in Madrid, the capital of Spain. Trying to survive against the socioeconomic problems caused by the pandemic.

In Spain, the country with the highest number of pandemic cases in Europe, the capital Madrid continues to be the focal point of the pandemic. The decline in tourism and the strict measures taken increase the problems of the restaurant industry even more.

More than 40,000 restaurants and bars across the country closed, unable to withstand the economic crisis caused by Covid-19.

Botin restaurant, which has been serving in Madrid since 1725, both its reputation and accumulation. Although lucky with restaurant capacity compared to other restaurants in the sector, he suffered great losses due to the pandemic.

Antonio Gonzalez, third-generation member of the Spanish family, who has run the restaurant since 1930, said.

“Even during the Spanish Civil War, this restaurant did not close. My grandfather continued to work here. But the (restaurant) was closed with legal decisions during the state of emergency declared due to Covid-19 (14 March-21 June), “he said.

Gonzalez, who said that they opened the 300-year-old oven, which he described as “the apple of the restaurant”, every morning during the state of emergency period.

“There were two reasons for this. First, the long shutdowns of these antique ovens create serious problems. We had to keep it warm and preserve its aroma. Second, it is romantic for us to burn that oven every day.”

Gonzalez expressing the effect of Covid-19 on the Botin restaurant as “a terrible and sudden change.”

“We are a restaurant that normally hosts up to 600 customers a day. But this has now decreased to 60. 63 of the 75 personnel working in our restaurant are at home with short-time allowance. Only 12 of them work. Our monthly loss is 50-60 thousand Euros. We can last 1-2 years this way. ”

“Our customers in Madrid naturally preferred to stay in their own neighborhoods and not go to the city center due to the pandemic. But even if our customers do not come, they continue to be our customers. Because we did not experience any loss of customers due to our business or our meals. This gives us some relief. This is an international health problem. If the loss of customers were our cause, then we would be much more desperate.”

Gonzalez, who stated that they entered the Guinness Book of Records in 1987 as “the oldest restaurant in the world”, on the initiative of a British customer, without their own demands. “Before us this title was in a restaurant in Paris. But there are three important criteria to get this title, such as always having the same name, being in the same place, and never closing it.”

Botin restaurant hosted many famous names, from Ava Gardner to Woody Allen.
