The number of floods will be doubled in the next century

Scientists have announced that in the next 80 years, coastal floods will double due to global warming, so at least 77 million people are in danger.
However, it was stated that the damage to the coasts will cost the world economy about 10 trillion pounds and this figure is equivalent to one fifth of the global national income.

British and Australian scientists evaluated global climate change projections. Researchers from the universities of Melbourne and East East Anglia calculated that if the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increases similarly to today, it would double the coastal floods in 2100.

Glacier melting due to global warming was cited as the main reason for the increase of coastal floods.

However, the researchers stated that tens of millions of people will be transported as a result of flooding the houses they live in due to flooding, and that the cost of the damage to the global economy will be more than £ 10 trillion (about 91 trillion Turkish Liras). According to the World Bank’s 2019 data, the global GDP is currently $ 142 trillion.

According to the researchers, an area of 797 thousand 716 square kilometers, which is currently on the shore of the sea and oceans in the world, is affected by the coastal floods, this area is expected to increase 250 thousand square kilometers globally in 2100. This means that at least 77 million people are at risk of flooding.

In the study, Northwest Europe, Southeast and East Asia and North of Eurasia will be affected the most from floods, however, he stated that there will be intense coastal floods in England and Northern Europe towards the end of the century.

Ebru Kirezci from Melbourna University, one of the lead authors of the research, said, “Sea level rises and glaciers are melting due to global warming. Climate change also increases incidents at sea. This significantly increases the risk of flooding. Our research reveals the importance of an urgent action plan for people living on the coasts. ”

Kirezci added that the study is a call for awakening for governments and underlined that the structures on the coasts should be reconsidered and the carbon dioxide emission should be tackled.
