The Netherlands has never had a year as warm as 2020

With an average of 12.7 degrees Celsius in De Bilt, this year is still the hottest year ever in the Netherlands. That makes Weeronline known. Normally the average temperature is 11.1 degrees.

In 2007 the average temperature was also 12.7 degrees. Only if you look a little further behind the decimal point, 2020 will be slightly warmer. After this year and 2007, 2014 (12.6 degrees), 2018 (12.4 degrees) and 2019 (12.2 degrees) will follow closely.

The differences in the country are large this year. For example, it was generally warm in the south, while in the north it was not the hottest year ever. For example, the hottest year on record was recorded in the southern cities of Maastricht and Eindhoven, while in Leeuwarden in the north it was warmer in 2007 and 2014.

So far this year 104 warm days (20 degrees or more) have been counted in De Bilt. That is nineteen more than average, and that number will probably increase to Tuesday. Until then the weather will be relatively warm. The number of really summery days (25 degrees or more) this year is now 31, five more than average. It became tropically warm (31 degrees or more) twelve times, against four on average.

In the Netherlands it was not only warm this year, but also exceptionally sunny. Only in 2003 did the sun appear more often, according to Weeronline. Meanwhile the sun was shining at 1723 hours. By September 7, the sun had already shone more than in a “normal” year. If the sun continues to shine for the next few days, 2020 could take the top spot in terms of sunshine hours.
