Tim Berners-Lee, one of the few who played an important role in shaping the digital world, is the signature of the internet, which has radically changed many of our habits.
Tim Berners-Lee was born on June 8, 1955 in London, the capital of England. British scientist, sometimes referred to as the ‘father of the internet’, where he addresses the site as ‘http: // www …’.
Thanks to the fact that an IT scientist is a child, he met technology at an early age. In his childhood, his parents worked on a model called Ferranti Mark 1. After the successful project, Ferranti Mark 1 went down in history as the first commercial computer model produced.
He studied Physics at Queen College between 1973 and 1976 in Oxford. He made his first computer model in these years. He created this model by turning an old television set into a computer.
After graduation, he worked as an engineer in telecommunication companies for a while. By 1980, he signed a career change that would enable us to hear his name. From June 1980 to December 1980, he worked at a company at the European Nuclear Research Center (CERN).
Although not part of his work here, he proposed developing a project based on the concept of hypertext, with the aim of facilitating the sharing and updating of information among researchers.
Within the scope of this project, a prototype system called ‘ENQUIRE’ was formed, which is the basis of WWW.
His time in Geneva provided him with experiences about the computer network. When he returned to CERN 4 years later, the idea of ’WWW’ was well matured in his mind. However, this dream had to take approximately 5 years to be true.
In 1989, CERN had the opportunity to join the hypertext via the Internet, as it has the largest IT infrastructure in Europe. When the calendars showed March 12, the first seeds of the internet were sown. Tim Berners-Lee came up with the idea of “World Wide Web” (WWW) and prepared the necessary codes for the establishment of the internet.
WWW, which was created with the development of the computer language that Lee defined as ‘Rich Text Markup Language / HTML’, started to be used on 13 March 1989 to enable physicists at CERN to easily share their research results.
The first website named ‘info.cern.ch’ was launched in 1991 in line with the needs of CERN. In this way, WWW has ceased to be a service that runs in CERN and has opened up to Earth.
It took about 5 years for the Internet to become popular. Internet explorer Mosaic was the basis for Netscape, released in 1994. A year later, the launch of “browser wars” with the launch of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer prepared the end of Netscape.
The rapid increase in the number of users has also brought the internet into commercial life. Amazon.com site started selling books online in 1994. In 1996, the phone developed by Nokia landed on mobile phones.
Lee had no intention of turning his invention into cash. In 1994, he established the World Wide Web Consortium or W3C for short, to ensure that WWW is free and available to everyone.
It was included in the ‘100 geniuses of the 20th century’ list prepared by Time magazine in 1999. Five years later, she was awarded the title of ‘knight’ by Queen Elizabeth II, for her contributions to human culture.
