Tens of thousands of people in Russia protest against the arrest of dissident Navalny

Human rights organizations announced that more than 2 thousand people were detained in demonstrations organized throughout the country.

Tens of thousands of people in Russia organized a demonstration for the release of the imprisoned Russian opposition Alexei Navalny.

Russia’s mainly Moscow and St. Tens of thousands of people participated in the unauthorized demonstrations held in many cities including St. Petersburg.

Police interfered with the demonstrators, mostly high school and university students, and detained many people. Human rights organizations in the country announced that more than 2 thousand people were detained.

During the demonstrations, Navalny’s wife, Yuliya Navalnaya was also detained.

Some demonstrators went to the relatives of Matrosskaya Tishina Prison where Navalnıy was detained and shouted slogans against the government.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia announced that 42 police officers were injured in the demonstrations, which broke out from time to time between police and protesters.

While some demonstrators were seen throwing snowballs and eggs at the police, police forces closed transportation routes such as metro and bus to the center in big cities. In addition, internet access was limited in areas where demonstrations were held.

After he was imprisoned, the video titled “Palace for Putin: The History of the Greatest Bribery” published by Navalny’s team on the YouTube channel and targeting President Vladimir Putin and his close circle has exceeded 70 million views.

In his statement yesterday, Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitriy Peskov argued that the protests held to support Navalny were “illegal and unacceptable”.
