WHO IS SUGA?

South Korean rapper and songwriter Min Yoon Gi with the stage name “Suga” was born on March 9, 1993 in South Korea. Having one older brother, Suga’s zodiac sign is fish, 1.74 tall and 59 kilograms.

HOW HAS HIS CAREER STARTED?

He joined the BTS group in 2013, under the management of Big Hit Entertainment. He became interested in rap after hearing “Reggae Muffin” from South Korean singer Stony Skunk. He then decided to become a rapper after listening to South Korea’s Hip-Hop group Epic High.

He started writing lyrics and learning piano at the age of 13, and started making his own music at the music studio where he worked at the age of 17. Before joining the BTS group, he was known as an “underground rapper”.

INDIVIDUAL STUDIES

Suga released a free mixtape of his own name via SoundCloud on August 15, 2016. The following year, in 2017, Suga composed the song “Wine” for singer Suran, with whom he previously worked for a single on his mixtape. Suga later produced a track for Epik High’s Sleepless titled “Eternal Sunshine” in 2019. He wrote and produced the digital single “We Don’t Talk Together”, which he released in July.

MEET WITH BTS AND SUCCESS

Suga, who initially joined the company as a music producer, spent three years at Big Hit Entertainment with members J-Hope and RM. He made his debut as a BTS member on Mnet’s M Countdown with the track “No More Dream” from their first single album 2 Cool 4 Skool. It served as the entry for BTS’s 2016 compilation album, ‘The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever’. Suga released two solo tracks under the BTS group name. The first is the song “First Love”, which was released on BTS’s 2016 studio album Wings, an autobiographical rap track reminiscent of a monologue. In another, on his 2018 compilation album Love Yourself: Answer, Suga released the song “Trivia: Seasaw”, which discusses the more or less nature of falling in love. In the same year, Suga, along with other members of the group, was awarded by the President of South Korea as a member of BTS with the state outstanding service medal.

WHERE DOES THE NAME SUGA COME FROM?

The stage name Suga derives from the first syllables of the term ‘shooting guard’, the position he played as a student in basketball.

AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Suga’s song “Wine” released in 2017 won the best Soul / R & B track of the year at the Melon Music Awards on December 2, 2017. Suga also received the “Hot Trend Award” for his work on the stage. Suga then re-released the mixed playlist for digital purchase and streaming in February 2018. The re-edition ranked 3rd on Billboard’s World Albums Chart, 5th on the Heatseekers Albums chart, and 74th on the Best Album Sales chart. On May 6, 2020, IU released its digital single “Eight”, featuring and produced by Suga. The song debuted at number one on the Gaon Digital Chart and Billboard World Digital Songs charts. Suga released his second mixtape D-2 (sequel to Agust D) on May 22 with the music video for his lead single “Daechwita”, reaching 76th place on the US Billboard Hot 100. Mixtape entered the Billboard 200 at number 11 and became the highest-listed album by a Korean soloist in the United States. It was also the first Korean solo release to be in the top 10 in the UK and ranked 7th on the UK albums chart.

INSPIRED NAMES
His songs are inspired by Skunk and Epic High. In particular, he constantly talks about his old reggae-hip-hop album Ragga Muffin, which pioneered his interest in the hip-hop music style.
