Russia's largest population drop in 15 years

According to the data of the Russian Federal Statistical Institute (Rosstat), the population of the country decreased from 146 million 750 thousand people to 146 million 240 thousand people in 2020 compared to the previous year.

Russia’s population decreased by 510 thousand in 2020 compared to the previous year, the biggest decrease in the last 15 years.

This decline was recorded as the biggest decline in population since 2005. The population of the country decreased by 564 thousand in 2005.

71 thousand 651 people died in Russia due to the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

Experts warn that the flow of immigrants to Russia is also decreasing, which, combined with the country’s long-standing low birth rates, could lead to another demographic problem.
