Rebellion of “giving water to the USA” in Mexico

In the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, a group of demonstrators protesting the release of dam waters due to the country’s obligation to supply water to the US set fire on some state-owned vehicles and a government building.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador stated that opposition politicians support the protests on their own grounds.

Emphasizing that there is enough water for farmers and repayments to the USA, Lopez Obrador criticized the “confrontational attitude” of the demonstrators and the burning of federal property.

Expressing that Mexico received four times more water along the border, especially in the Colorado River basin, under the agreement between the two countries from the United States, Lopez Obrador pledged that “farmers and local residents will not be deprived of water”.

Chihuahua Governor Javier Corral said that those who provoked “vandalism and violence in the state” were investigated and “the actions of criminals would not go unpunished.”

Recognizing a major increase in water use in the region, Corral criticized the federal government for mismanaging water resources.

PROTESTO AND CONFLICTS HAVE EVER BEFORE

Due to Mexico’s obligation to supply water to the United States, there have been protests and conflicts in the country.

“We do not want an international conflict. If we have signed a treaty, we have to comply with it,” President Lopez Obrador said in February, underlining that there is enough water. he said.

After Obrador announced that his country should pay the water debt to the USA, there was a rift between the farmers who wanted to seize a dam in the border area and the National Guard forces.

The protesters closed the roads by setting the cars on fire in March and organized a protest at the La Boquilla Dam in the state.

In a video published on social media this month by deputy Mario Mata Carrasco, it was seen that security forces intervened in a protest in Chihuahua with tear gas. In the clash at Las Virgenes Dam near the state of Texas, the farmers said that they needed water for their crops.

While the state government announced that the release of water to the United States was stopped until the final decision on the issue was made, the Mexican National Water Commission stated that farmers had enough water for their products and that the water continued to be released to the United States.

MEXICAN FARMERS WORRIED

According to the International Border and Water Commission, which oversees the agreement’s compliance, Mexico is obliged to provide the United States with 2.1 billion cubic meters of water every five years. The USA, in turn, supplies Mexico with more water than western water supplies.

In the current five-year cycle, Mexico continued to pay between 2015 and 2017. However, since 2018, when Obrador took office, Mexico began to deliver less water. The Obrador administration is supposed to supply 512 million cubic meters of water to the United States by 24 October. The payment in question is made through the dam waters in Mexico.

Farmers in the region state that if the water is given to the USA, they will face water shortage.
