Starbase, the Texas headquarters of Elon Musk’s SpaceX space company, is officially becoming a city after residents voted overwhelmingly to incorporate it.
Elon Musk’s “Starbase” in South Texas, which operates as SpaceX’s main base, has taken an important step towards becoming a city. The Starbase idea, first brought to the agenda by Elon Musk in March 2021, has reached a significant milestone after three years. In the referendum held in the region, the vast majority supported Starbase becoming an official city. However, the decision has not yet been made official; the final say lies with local governments.
Now Musk has a city
In the vote held in the region located within the borders of Cameron County and mostly home to SpaceX employees, 212 people voted in favor of urbanization, while only 6 people opposed the proposal. According to the law, 143 “yes” votes were sufficient, so the vote is technically considered successful. However, in order for the election to be officially considered valid, it must be approved by local judges and authorities.
Starbase is a strategic center where SpaceX develops rocket engines, launches spacecraft and produces advanced space technologies. If it gains city status, SpaceX is expected to face fewer bureaucratic hurdles during testing and launch processes, and will be able to act more independently, especially on issues such as temporarily closing public roads and beaches.
Starbase, Texas, is now “a real city!” Musk wrote on social media site X. Starbase’s newly opened social media account also stated: “Becoming a city will help us continue to build the best possible community for the men and women who are building the future of humanity’s place in space.”
