New claim on black infant deaths in the US

A new study in the US claimed that the death rate of newborn black babies cared for by white doctors was 3 times higher.

In the research conducted at George Mason University and published in the journal Proceedings of the United States National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), “It turns out that black babies born in the US have a higher survival rate when cared for by black doctors, and three times more likely to die when done by white doctors.”

Investigating data on 1.8 million babies born in Florida state hospitals between 1992 and 2015, the researchers found that death rates for black babies births with black physicians dropped by 39 to 58 percent.

In contrast, it was concluded that death rates in white baby births were not affected by the physician’s racial status.

Researchers, “These results are more strongly evident in complicated cases and in hospitals with high births of black babies,” said, claiming that black doctors outperformed their white counterparts in caring for black babies.

In the research report, “Awareness of racial inequalities among doctors, nurses and hospital managers needs to be increased in order to reduce newborn infant mortality,” the statement read.

A report prepared by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) based on data between 2000 and 2017, It reveals that black babies are still twice as likely to die as white babies.
