Messi stays, President Bartomeu is gone

The crisis that started with Lionel Messi’s demand for separation in Barcelona removed president Josep Maria Bartomeu from his seat. Bartomeu announced his decision to resign.

Josep Maria Bartomeu and the board of directors, who had been president of Spain’s Barcelona club since 2014, resigned. Bartomeu, which was criticized by some football players in the team, especially Lionel Messi. He submitted his resignation due to the developments that took place after the signatures collected by the club members to lower the board of directors.

“I am here to present the resignation of myself and the other members of the board. This is our common decision,” Bartomeu said at the press conference.

Bartomeu “The will of the board has never been to keep its place in the club. Quitting after being eliminated in the Champions League (8-2 against Bayern Munich) was easy, but we had to guarantee the club’s future amid an unprecedented global crisis. We could not leave the club in the hands of a single executive. Who could sign the coach or the players? Who could keep Messi going or set salaries? As the board of directors we had to do.”

Stating that Barcelona will hold the presidential election as soon as possible according to the regulation, Bartomeu said that if there were no legal developments regarding the referendum. He  had no reason to resign before the elections announced in March and leave the club management vacant.

Noting that all of the allegations made by dissenting members of the club about himself and other members of the board who were exposed to insults and threats were “fake”, Bartomeu said. We are proud to serve Barcelona, which has won a total of 149 cups in all sports branches since 2010.
