Government’s 2021 budget protested in Guatemala

Thousands of people in the Central American country of Guatemala, education in the government’s 2021 budget. Protested the decision to cut health spending.

According to the news in the country press, thousands of students opposing the budget cuts in question. Trade unions and various non-governmental organizations, in the capital Guatemala. They gathered on the site of the National Palace of Culture.

As the quiet protests turned violent, the police intervened with tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd. Some furniture and office supplies badly damaged when some demonstrators broke into the congress building and set the building on fire.

Many demonstrators detained in the incidents where the police intervened with tear gas to remove groups entering the congress building.

President Alejandro Giammattei, in a statement on Twitter, stated that everyone has the right to demonstrate and gather according to the law. “We cannot allow damage to public property and private property. Those who break the rules specified by the law will pay the price for this”

In the voting held at the Guatemala Congress during the week, the “2021 National Budget” was approved by the votes of 114 lawmakers.
