Disaster grows in Mauritius: Oil tanker was splits in two

Environmental disaster in the island nation of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean is growing. The oil spill increased with the splitting of the stranded ship in two.

The Mauritius administration announced that they will seek compensation from the Japanese company that owns the tanker for the damage to the environment, as well as for the people whose livelihoods were affected by the accident.

728 tons of the approximately one thousand tons of fuel spread on the turquoise beaches of Mauritius were cleaned by teams and volunteers.

The Japanese-flagged cargo ship that crashed into coral reefs on 25 July was carrying 4,000 tons of fuel.

The people of Mauritius had donated their hair to support their prevention efforts.
