Sao Paulo
The new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic caused various problems in areas such as health, education and economy, as well as family life. The number of couples divorced in Brazil in the last half of last year increased due to the pandemic.

According to the research of the Brazilian Notary Institute (CNB), 43 thousand 859 divorces were made in the country in the last half of 2020 only in notaries. In the study, it was pointed out that these divorces, which were made outside the court in the said period, were 15 percent more than the same time period in 2019.

In the study, which recorded more than 7,600 divorce transactions in October 2020, it was emphasized that this figure is the highest number since 2007, when divorce records were kept in the country.

In the study, it was noted that the historical divorce record was also broken in the last 6 months of 2020 in 16 states in the country.

Curfews and quarantine affect increase in divorce
CNB President Giselle Oliveira de Barros said that 2020 is an extraordinary year, bringing many changes in terms of living together and providing services to citizens.

Barros stated that with the outbreak of the Covid-19 outbreak, notaries were allowed to provide their services electronically in order to solve personal and property-related problems of citizens without leaving home.

CNB officials stated that they reached the conclusion that curfews and quarantines applied within the scope of the measures to combat the Covid-19 pandemic also have an effect on this increase in the number of divorces.

The authorities stated that the notaries wanted to apply online divorce in order to facilitate this process.
