Chelsea are being linked with Kai Havertz and Jadon Sancho as the summer transfer window grows closer. But while the pair would be significant purchases, Frank Lampard may already have the perfect setup in place for new signing Timo Werner. The RB Leipzig star will be moving to west London at the end of the Bundesliga campaign having chosen the Blues over Liverpool, who were also keen.

Make no mistake about it, Chelsea’s decision to sign Werner could be a game-changer.

He has gone from strength to strength during his time at RB Leipzig and, in particular, since the appointment of Julian Nagelsmann as manager at the Red Bull Arena.

Werner has scored 32 goals for Leipzig this season. Only Robert Lewandowski, who has the advantage of playing for Bayern Munich, has found the net more in German football.

Now, the talk is of how Chelsea could accommodate him.

Tammy Abraham is likely to be the fall guy. The England international has done well this season but Werner is a class above – as he’s shown throughout the course of the campaign.

And even if Chelsea end up missing out on Havertz and Sancho, who are both linked with Manchester United, they may already have the perfect setup for their new talisman.

Should Werner be deployed in the No 9 role, as expected, the Blues have options aplenty to go around him.

Willian and Pedro will be departing Stamford Bridge this summer as things stand but, while they’ve been good club servants, their waning suggests few tears will be shed.

Chelsea already got a glimpse of an exciting new era on Sunday against Aston Villa, with Christian Pulisic coming off the bench to spark a remarkable comeback.

There’s more to come from the USA international, who has struggled for consistency and with injuries throughout his time in the capital so far.

But the talent is there and Pulisic’s potential is huge. Just a year ago, before his move to Chelsea, he was viewed as the standout young talent in Borussia Dortmund’s ranks.

Chelsea shouldn’t be too hasty to write off Calum Hudson-Odoi, either.

Like Pulisic he’s endured a frustrating season, one not helped by injury problems. But he did enough under Maurizio Sarri to suggest he’s got the potential to shine in the long run.

There’s a reason why United were linked with Hudson-Odoi and interest did exist. Chelsea definitely viewed him signing a new contract to be a major coup.

And he’s another who has the creative juices that may lead to Werner plundering in goals galore.

Then there’s Hakim Ziyech.

Out of all the players Chelsea have – and Ziyech falls under that category even if he’s technically still with Ajax – the Morocco international is the one fans are hoping can really unlock Werner’s true potential.

Last summer, everybody feared for Ajax.
