Austrian and Belgian Foreign Ministers caught Covid-19

Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg and Belgian Foreign Minister Sophie Wilmes attended on 12 October. Covid-19 tests they had done after the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting were positive.

The EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting was held in Luxembourg on 12 October with the participation of the foreign ministers of the European Union (EU) countries. Covid-19 tests made by Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg and Belgian Foreign Minister Sophie Wilmes after the meeting were positive.

Experts think the meeting could be a “super spreader” after 2 ministers tested positive. In a statement made by the Austrian Foreign Ministry, it was stated that Minister Schallenberg and Belgian counterpart, Wilmes, were sitting side by side at the group breakfast held at the meeting on October 12th.

“Schallenberg is suspected to have been infected at the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg on Monday,” the ministry said. The State Department explained that Schallenberg had no symptoms and was tested as a routine measure. The Ministry stated that Schallenberg’s only bilateral meeting in Luxembourg was with Irish counterpart, Simon Coveney, but social distancing measures were implemented and Coveney was informed of Schallenberg’s positive test result.

“As a precautionary measure, all members of the government will be tested on Saturday,” the State Department said Schallenberg also attended a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, but all cabinet members were wearing masks. Minister Wilmes, on the other hand, said in a statement that she showed symptoms similar to Covid-19 yesterday and quarantined herself quickly, while today the test result was positive.

“Considering the measures taken outside my home, there are probably those in my family who are infected,” Wilmes said in a statement on her social media account.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas announced that the Covid-19 test he had done yesterday was negative and he had no close contact with Schallenberg. Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde will work from home until she gets a negative test result. The Covid-19 test conducted by French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian in Algeria on Thursday was negative.
