Alexei Navalny detained at airport on return to Russia

While the Russian dissident Navalny was returning to his country from Germany, where he was treated for poisoning, some of his supporters who were waiting for him at the airport in Moscow were detained.

In Moscow, the capital of Russia, opposition supporters gathered at Vnukovo Airport to welcome Alexei Navalny on his return to Moscow. No one, including members of the media, who did not have a ticket, was taken to the airport, where the police took intense security measures since daytime.

The Anti-Corruption Fund lawyer Lubov Sobol, founded by Navalny, who managed to enter the airport building, Alexey Navalny’s brother and some prominent opponents were detained by the police.

Police intervened with the Navalny supporters who entered the building after a while, and forced some of the crowd out of the building. Those who opposed the police intervention were also detained.

The plane that Navalny arrived was diverted to another airport.

Pobeda airline announced that the plane carrying Navalny from Berlin will not land at Vnukovo Airport. It was reported that the plane was directed to Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow.

The allegation that “Navalny was poisoned”

The plane landed in the city of Omsk after Navalny got sick during the flight on 20 August 2020 to go to Moscow from Russia’s Tomsk city.

It was alleged that Navalny, who was hospitalized in Omsk, was poisoned with a substance mixed with his tea. Navalny, 44, was transferred from Omsk to the Charite Hospital in Berlin on a private plane on 22 August 2020.

German Government Spokesperson Steffen Seibert announced on September 2, 2020 that Navalny was definitely poisoned with a chemical belonging to the Noviçok group used in the fight against nervous diseases.

Seibert noted that on September 14, 2020, Navalny’s poisoning was confirmed by 2 more independent laboratories in Sweden and France.

Charite Hospital reported on September 7, 2020 that Navalny’s health was improving and he was out of a coma.

Navalny’s team also claimed that the chemical belonging to the Noviçok group was found in the water bottle in the hotel room where he had previously stayed in Tomsk, Navalny.

Aleksey Navalny was discharged from the Charite Hospital where he was treated in Berlin on September 23, 2020.
