Akufo-Addo re-elected president in Ghana

It was reported that the current President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was re-elected in Ghana after the presidential elections held on 7 December.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the candidate of the National Patriotic Party (NPP) and the current President, was re-elected in the presidential elections held in the West African country Ghana on 7 December. Akufo-Addo won with 51.59 percent of the vote, according to a statement from the Independent Election Commission. Akufo-Addo’s biggest rival in the presidential race was John Dramani Mahama, leader of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), with 47.36 percent of the vote.

“In the Republic of Ghana, I declare Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as an elected candidate,” Independent Election Commission Chairman Jean Mensa said in a statement.

Observers from 20 countries and 130 institutions took part in the elections in different parts of the country.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Observer Chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), said in a statement that the public protects the country’s democracy and is a transparent election.

Twelve candidates competed for the presidency in Ghana, which has a population of approximately 31 million.
