300 climate activists demonstrate in Zuidas, Halsema bans occupation

The climate activists of Extinction Rebellion are targeting the Zuidas this weekend. The actions started on Friday morning with a demonstration on Gustav Mahlerplein near Station Zuid, but the protesters announced last week that they also wanted to occupy an intersection.

The climate activists target multinationals based in the Zuidas. In a “black book” companies such as paint manufacturer AkzoNobel, oil company ENI, and “agricultural giant” Louis Dreyfus are accused of environmental pollution.

The coronavirus was taken into account as best as possible by the 300 to 400 protesters present on Friday morning. Extinction Rebellion, for example, had called for masks to be worn.

With reference to the corona virus, Halsema also made additional demands on the demonstrations on Museumplein this entire weekend. They are not allowed for more than four hours a day. The site must also be cleared every evening.

On the Museumplein, the activists want to recharge after today for spontaneous actions on Saturday and Sunday. “Last year I noticed that after the first day I was quite exhausted,” says Pippi van Ommen (24). A larger action is planned on the Zuidas for Monday morning. Van Ommen: “The lobby blocks climate policy, so we block the lobby.”
